Past to Present

First of all I'd like to present you with one of my favourite projects of the year - Typography (Type as Image & Image as Type)

In this module we were required to produce a typeface from scratch using shapes/characters found within a piece of 'art' (if you can call it that) that was drawn/created during an exercise done in a session. This consisted of each student to bring in a variety of things which "make a mark" - for example pens and pencils are standard, while another girl brought a bright pink lip-stick to use, some people brought inks and others brought chalks etc - we were told to think outside the box.

Each of us had an A3 piece of white paper. We were told to use anything to mark the page and write our names anyway you liked or you could write a word to express yourself. As we were ordered to move onto another persons page we had random times set to do this, so some were incomplete - but this just added to the shapes left on the sheet to work with.

Above are images of the first typeface that I created by using the shapes on my A3 sheet, after the exercise. I've put the 5 images up to show the flow of the project.
